Cautious Clay Continues Ridiculous 2018 Pace with Hudson Mohawke-produced, REASONS
Evan Dale // Dec 4, 2018
In so many ways, 2018 has belonged to Cautious Clay. This time last year, the transcendental Brooklyn songwriter was introducing himself to the world with a pair of emotionally-evoking anthems – Cold War & Joshua Tree – that landed his early comparisons somewhere between the youthful spirit of Kid Cudi and the invaluable wisdom of Raury. One year later, and Cautious Clay has released his debut and his sophomore EP’s (Blood Type & Resonance), a remix collection of Blood Type, a trio of creative music videos (Crowned, Cold War, and a coinciding acoustic edition), a vibrant feature with AlunaGeorge on Superior Emotion, landed an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, and on top of it all, found time to don on all of us a further collection of integral singles, Juliet + Caesar, Stolen Moments, and now, his latest, REASONS.
REASONS, which proving the artistic value of Cautious Clay’s one-of-a-kind musical approach, comes cosigned by Hudson Mohawke production, is a little bit of a jarring change of pace that lives up to its ALLCAPS titling. But even taking into account its bass-heavy intro and expectedly vibrant and buzzy Mohawke beat, REASONS in no way whatsoever escapes Cautious Clay’s powerful grip. His soulful range waves easily in and out of the production and couples with it the resonating emotional touch he always brings to the table.
