Left-of-center suburban melancholy finds its truth in Deadmall – the new-wave mellow pop project by way of Massachusetts friends, Gabe Gill and Honeyfitz. Chasing last week’s premiere single and video, Right Now with a self-titled three-track debut EP, the duo excels most strongly in expanding their sound. Where Right Now bubbles over with energy and hip-hop inspiration, Acid Beat and Sedatives live up to their psychedelic and mellow titling respectively, proving a deeper and more well-rounded creative vision to be expected from two subtle DIY soloists.

It’s often hard to make a big gesture with a small body of work, but Deadmall succeed and owe it to balance in their creativity. Deadmall 1 is a wide-ranging peek into the possibilities when two artistic machines pool their talent to unearth something differing completely from their work as individuals, and further proof that the expansive nature of the mellow pop movement continues to push its own limits.
