Age is just a number connecting and confining a thing to a bygone time, and Portland’s quickly, quickly simply belongs to the most contemporary. The only date worth mentioning is August 3, when his Over Skies EP was released.

The producer whose established sounds range from the high-fidelity and the high energy to the intrinsic, the instrumental, and the ambient, has no problem exhibiting the mellow end of that range over the EP’s misleading 18 minutes. It’s easy to get lost in the ambiance of it all.

Yet, it’s impossible to escape the music completely. Even through the seamless blending between tracks and the undeniably low-key textures on display, something (somethings) about it draw attention back to the music that would in any other producer’s hands, become a comforting albeit mindless backdrop.

When drawn back in, the subtle complexities of quickly, quickly’s approach reveal themselves. Impossibly deep, detailed layering drive direction to the point that even the project’s auditory white spaces have been expertly crafted and painstakingly organized. A studied and steadied balance between methods analogue and digital separate quickly, quickly and his knack for defining the experimental, complex, yet soothing future of music from his less obsessive-compulsive-driven peers.

That detail, that balance, and the rare ability to blend instrumentation and vocals into the fold are what make quickly, quickly, Over Skies such a listenable project.
