Compton's Hip-Hop Future Shines on EMD's new Anthem, Crowns
Evan Dale // Aug 12, 2018
There is always something happening in Southern California, but right now, our focus is honed on a particular set of collaborators and friends including Boogie, KB Devaughn, HeyDeon, and Epicmustdie whose Crowns features three of the four. The track, which comes as just one of the dozen included in his latest project, Trust Fall, is a refreshingly positive and enlightening West Coast anthem. Its relatability and understated positivism – something so rare across modern music – is what draws us to these artists and the majority of their work. There is something graspable and enjoyable about the normalcy of it all and something so classically addicting about its messages of self-love and mutual respect.
And through it all, it fails to lose anything that makes it grass roots, timeless West Coast hip-hop. Between the low-fidelity synth strokes, the lyrical give and take, and the warm and fuzzy thematics, it’s our easy pick for favorite from Trust Fall, but don’t let that keep you from exploring the entire project which altogether is a masterful work.
I’m not the average n***a from the radio
My wealth is not determined by the price of my clothes
But I’ve learned to love myself unconditionally
Because I am a king.
