Brooklyn's Old School Ur Maa is Livin' Right with New Single
Evan Dale // Feb 4, 2019
On Ur Maa’s SoundCloud page, you’ll find two important notes: that his name is in fact pronounced (or-muh-ah) and that he self-describes as ‘Brooklyn from 1996.’ The difficulty of his name can be overcome, but the description shouldn’t be overlooked. Though he might seem a 23-year-old from New York’s most artistically-inclined borough, he’s actually a time-traveler from Brooklyn’s most innovatively-vulnerable hip-hop era. We’ve touched on his old-school tendencies in the past which owe their existence to his low-fidelity, experimental production and his knack for belaying meaningful lyricism in ways that can’t help but remind us of a different moment. And with his latest singe, livin right, he embarks on yet another exploration of minimalist beat-making and meditative lyricism that again bring to mind a boombox era come and gone.
He might describe livin right as being “literally a throw away song” but it’s the furthest thing from trash. Instead, it’s an artistic release bridging his last project, the genius Ever Present, with whatever is coming next.
