When I first heard Snoh Aalegra’s newest joint, I Want You Around, I immediately felt like I was tossed into the throws of some underground jazz club where a full four piece setup was laying the foundation for a perfectly emotive vocalist to put us all under her spell. She’s one of those voices that entrances and enthralls with each note, allowing time to pass or not pass at the will of her music. Gentle piano keystrokes dance just underneath Aalegra’s tonal range, a deep bass plays just beneath that, and a fervent and simple drum pattern lays the track for it all to be possible. 

 

I Want You Around is perfect, simple, minimalist sound design where no one element does too much, but all are reliant on one another. The result is the silkiest, butteriest, most timeless R&B / Neo-Soul track of 2019 so far, and we can’t wait for more.
