Mahalia continues her fiery tear across the international music scene with an unexpectedly somber and downtempo single, Surprise Me. The young UK songstress and at this point, star, has made a point of dropping relationship reminiscers, but has tended in the past to take the route of the powerful and emotionally superior protagonist. But, with her new track, although still existing within her signature female force role, she seems to have been surprised and taken down a step by the undoing of love.

 

With the accompanying album art signifying the single as simply a piece to an as-of-yet unreleased five-track cut titled Seasons, perhaps the change in direction is a sign of more to come. And if that’s the case, we’re on board because at this moment in music history, there is no one more incapable of misstepping creatively than Mahalia.
