Spring has Sprung and KOTA the Friend Owns it with Birdie
Evan Dale // April 19, 2019
Spring is in the air and it shows in KOTA the Friend’s Birdie. The warm-weather jam is an anthem of sunshine, exhibiting the Brooklyn lyricist’s storytelling ability overtop a simple set of piano strokes. It’s the kind of track that plays when you roll over to cuddle your partner early in the morning. It’s the kind of track you play in the park over a bottle of rosé. And it’s the kind of laid-back hip-hop track we absolutely love.
It’s not easy to make something simultaneously emotion-evoking, simple, and so pumped full of talent, but KOTA the Friend has entered that moment in his career where the uniqueness of his lane has been nearly perfected, and in that moment, the simplest songs are often the best. There is so much realism to admire in the track that it’s easy to overlook just how well-done Birdie is. KOTA is an increasingly gifted writer and the effortlessness with which he goes about his craft is matched only by his production and subject matter.
So grab a boo, get under the sun, and bump Birdieall springtime long.
