Toronto's Annika Zee is the Coolest Thing in Mellow Pop with Fantasy

Toronto’s Annika Zee is an atmospheric architect fond of the sultry, the smooth, and the shyly emotional.  Built on a foundation of ghostly samples and electronically left-of-center production, her soundscape encompasses that which usually goes unnoticed and unspoken – ambient only to be interrupted by bold guitar and keystroke takes. But, cutting through it all are her daring and poppy vocals.

Fantasy is her latest and brings to mind the Mellow Pop movement of transcendent youth making bold but relatable music from the comfort of their bedroom studios. Where Aeriel Pink and Gus Dapperton started, the indefinable spectrum has exploded at an international scale and Annika Zee’s take on it all is perhaps the most professionally focused and experimentally crossroads that we’ve heard yet. Where electronica meets calming vocals, Annika Zee is like a pensive take on Alina Baraz whose music is equally emotional.
