Dragonball Durag was already one of the songs of the year and a standout on Thundercat’s already standout album, It Is What It Is. It didn’t need Smino, and it definitely didn’t Guapdad 4000. But now that they’re on the remix, wow. Dragonball Durag is the kind of fun-loving funk anthem that means much more than its short-sided hilarity. The track is an effortless masterpiece for the good times, poking fun of any serious sensual anthems through the decades. And ted to that same timelessness, both Smino and guapdad 4000 – as the often do – step out of any preconcieved comfort zone they had to go above and experimentally beyond.

 

Smino’s verse is a classic exhibition of wordplay, fit with well-tempered punchlines and an impossible to replicate verse. Guapdad’s is a melodically infused, dynamic display of his own knack for transcending his raps and his vocals with a sound only he could muster. In result, what was already one of the jammiest anthems of 2020 now has an even more addicting reprise.
