Sy Ari Da Kid is one of those difficult artists to define that makes music perpetually in the grey areas between hip-hop and R&B, blending styles and creating his own, unique sound. Though traditionally noted for his tracks that edge closer to the realm of R&B with slower delivery, sultry vocals, and provocative lyricism, he has recently found himself diving more into his hip-hop influence. His first album of 2017, 2 Soon, displayed the expected combination of tracks falling to either side of his range. The album that followed, 2 Weeks No Diss, saw a style more reflecting the current state of heavily produced melodic hip-hop.

 

And now, with his latest album, Better Safe Than Sy Ari, he has done anything but play it safe. In a bold and honest move, he has abandoned his heavy production and delivered a raw, top-notch rap record that has us wondering why Sy Ari ever went down any other path. The album features an impressive set of hip-hop up-and-comers like J.I.D. and EARTHGANG as well as features from respected artists, CyHi The Prynce and Quentin Miller. It comes together as a refreshing take on hip-hop less focused on production value and more focused on its roots – a trend that seems to be gaining momentum with other artists, most notably A$AP Rocky, making a similar minimalist move.

 

Truth be told, I have never been the biggest of Sy Ari fans. I’ve always respected his talent but preferred artists with a more defined sound. But with this new album, I’m on board, and I have to believe a lot of the music world feels the same.
