The Philharmonik Shows Off Stylistic Range in New Single Make A Play
Evan Dale // Aug 25, 2019
Sacramento soul, funk, and hip-hop transcendentalist, The Philharmonik is one of the more widely talented artists alive. Somewhere between songwriting, cadence, vocals, varied instrumentation, and production, he’s defined an auditory-aesthetic unbound by stylistic or epochal delineation. His self-titled debut album was one of the more standout collections of 2018, drawing akin the breadth of his approach into a digestible yet meaningful scope. And it’s that same scope that makes his single releases so unpredictable.
His newest is Make a Play, a soul-ridden track bleeding of the same vibrant emotion, thoughtful lyricism, and brash changes of stylistic pace we’ve come to expect in all his music. Teeming with a fast-paced opening rap verse, clean and inspired modern production, jazzy keys, and a soulful breakdown, it’s a well-rounded and downright danceable display of The Philharmonik’s many sliding scales.
