Western Mass Mellow-Pop Duo, DEADMALL End Year with Trio of Videos
Evan Dale // Dec 31, 2018
In a continuation of their exploration into left-of-center mellow-pop Americana, DEADMALL – an indefinably creative collaborative effort brought into the world by Gabe Gill and Honeyfitz – has brought more amateur video production and heart wrenching musicality into the open. Sedatives, a poppy and humorously-undertone single matches its whimsically bizarre direction with visuals shot in every poorly-lit spot in town. Eyelids, a particularly downtempo and emotionally-evoking ballad sees itself shot ‘neath a bridge where our two protagonists console one another and explode with vibrant and lyrical verses. And New Year – a short and sweet anthemic delivery feels like the music videos and skits we used to make with friends in our parent’s basement.
And in that description lies a pair of contrasting consistencies:
-
The truth and honesty of the grassroots art in something like a home video is brought to life in DEADMALL’s music.
-
Their music is far better and more professional than anything we ever made in a home video.
If anything sums up what DEADMALL is really up to here, it’s Elo Romero in the comment section for Sedatives: ‘This is one of the best projects to come out of western mass!!’
Yep, probably.
Onwards with the honest music. The world needs it.
