Interesting. Very interesting. Though A$AP Rocky’s new single doesn’t sound much like the Flacko we’ve grown to love over the years, we’d have to be pretty blind of his recent agenda to assume that it would. Rocky’s been uncharacteristically quiet for more than a year but when he has spoken up, he has preached of change and addressed the heavy experimentalism that his next album will feature – an album appropriately titled Testing.

It is uncertain whether the new track, ☆☆☆☆☆ 5IVE $TAR$ will make an appearance on the project, but what is blatantly obvious is that with the track, Rocky is headed in new directions. The song, which also features a funky, lovable hook from DRAM, is a barebones track, stripped of much influence from production.

So, what does this mean? Is Rocky making a statement on the overproduced, over-hyped trends of hip-hop; is he spearheading a new wave of a more minimalist approach; is he releasing quick music just to entertain fans; is he throwing us a curveball? Honestly, I have no idea, but the track has my attention and its lack of production is actually quite refreshing.

Check it out on Soundcloud and as always, be on the lookout for Testing soon
